I worked at St. Jude Medical full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

a good place for junior engineers to gain experience in medical device industry. Lots of smart people to learn from.

Cons

upper management focused on the stock price and profit margin. Quality is no longer a top priority. St. Jude Medical has paid tens of millions in fines to DOJ the last few years. Recent lay offs in the hundreds. Not a happy place anymore. Moral is terrible.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

replace the CEO with someone who has a moral compass and cares about developing and rewarding employees. Stop reducing benefits every year.

    Pros

Pay, location, and resources were pros.

    Cons

There is so much potential for this company as the product and business model have so much opportunity! Unfortunately, there is a fundamental lack of leadership, performance management, and vision in this company that creates pockets of incompetence. A select few are then stuck carrying the load. Hopefully, recent changes will turn that around.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on people and career development instead of singular focus on bottom line. Results will come bigger and better when you do!

Gain lots of experience, but must be willing to work hard. Company moral has suffered lately.

    Pros

Fortune 500 company with a stelar product line and great programs to help customers. It is easy to get excited about the products and the diversity of the growth drivers.

    Cons

Current management does not foster employee relations and they burn people out, both in-house and in the field. With recent layoffs, those that are remaining are expected to "do more with less" which is not sustainable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't forget that people are your greatest asset. It costs a lot of money to train new employees and while some reduction is force is necessary in the current economy, make sure you really have a plan to sustain the business before cutting people. The latest rounds of layoff were cutting meat off the bone, not fat. And people who weren't laid off are quitting because they don't have a work/life balance. And finally, with MTR may be right most of the time, he isn't right all the time. Some of the policies he put in place are providing ammo to the competition.
