I worked at St. Jude Medical full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good salary and benefits. Travel was not an issue. The entry level employees and manufacturing employees are very dedicated.

    Cons

short term thinking, a "check it off" mentality more concerned with speed than quality. Frequent layoffs and many contractors make it impossible to maintain any continuity of corporate knowledge. I believe this is the cause of the product recall.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Mr. Starks needs to come back to the office and take back control from the heir apparent. Forget about what Wall Street wants and concentrate on making a good product

Company lacks strong leaders, innovation is missing on many fronts, high employee burnout, low morale.

I worked at St. Jude Medical full-time

    Pros

St. Jude has promising potential, a great product line and a friendly atmosphere.

    Cons

"Leaders" are often times chosen based off of who they know rather than what they know; a flat out good 'ol boy system. Many managers don't understand what it takes to successfully run a business and if they do, their input is either overshadowed by political bureaucracy or apathy. Working for this company was like being on a constant chaotic roller coaster to hell each day I worked there; managers DO NOT understand the positions that they are managing forcing those with non-management titles to lead; very little training (if any), OBSOLETE systems; little value for employees; little communication from management on issues that matter and greatly affect all areas of operations; unrealistic demands; zero work life balance; pay is not good for the level of demand placed on a single person; little desire to improve upon historically "proven" procedures that are now outdated given the direction the company wants to head in; expectations are completely unrealistic forcing those that are left working for the company to do the work of four at any given time of the day. Applicant beware-this was the worst company I have ever worked for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

WAKE UP! Your people are your most valued assets. STOP hiring additional layers to the costly executive foundation and START by re-building a team of competent, driven employees that can support the true needs of the business. Your employees drive the growth of the company, treat them like it! There are very FEW minorities and women within leadership positions; this is a BIG problem; hire from outside of the industry; stop taking your competitors' throw aways, bring on some new blood with differing perspectives of success. Take a risk and INVEST in top of the line programs and R&D opportunities; your customers will thank you and your earnings will soar. The bottom line is important, but should not dominate company interest. Pave the way for change... and fast...because soon you are going to be no better than your underperforming competitor.
