I worked at St. Jude Medical full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It is a good place to launch a career or to gain skills -- but only if you report to a talented person with more than five years in the business. If you are mid-career or later, its only a good place if you are ex-Guidant or Medtronic, and then as a Director or higher. If they offer you a position that is a step up, consider it. After two years consider other options, and after three actively seek to move on. If you don't get a 4 or 5 on your performance appraisal, move on, you are not promotable. Good places to work are the Bay Area and St. Paul. Los Angeles and Dallas are neutral depending on the role. Avoid Austin.

    Cons

The culture has deteriorated along with market conditions. The execs that provided vision are largely gone and with them much of the seasoned middle management talent. Each year they reduce the benefits package and the recent raises were mediocre. Payout at full bonus has not happened in a while. Some executives are very short term focused. Others have a difficult time making up their minds. There seem to be serial reorganizations that result in key departments always being on the learning curve.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some Sr. Management have stayed too long or lost interest. It's time for new blood at the very top.
