Pros

SCB focusses on emerging markets, typically high growth economies where local expertise acquired over many years holds a (possibly temporary) competitive advantage for them. With a full suite of wholesale/investment banking products there are not many client needs SCB cannot address if it chooses.

Cons

There are certain strong ethnic 'cliques' that dominate aspects of the wholesale bank in particular. With these cliques having certain strongly specific working styles, the challenge for an 'outsider' from a different social and business background is to fit in, be part of in the information flow and not be excluded. In the wholesale bank in particular, it appears to help to be ethnically Indian if working in Singapore.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

One might speculate that constant restructuring is a bank leader's raison d'être! Once distant from daily client interactions, what value does one add if not to reshuffle the deck chairs? SCB's leaders are like those in many large banks, believing that solving complex strategic problems can be achieved by adjusting organisational structure; through moving reporting lines on 'organisation charts'. Push more decision making down the organisation; break-up ethnic cliques; aim for stability in strategy and structure; take long term views of markets and clients and don't follow the herd.

    Pros

Lots of trainings opportunities. The International Graduates program is good for new graduates as it offers not only comprehensive trainings but also almost unlimited job openings when you are deployed. As the bank is grounded in Asia, Africa, and Middle-East, you will have cross-country exposure such as collaborating with international colleagues and rotations in another country. It is also possible to move internally to other countries if you are capable and well-connected.

    Cons

The system and procedures are ever changing, which results in unnecessary inefficiency sometimes. The working hours could be long once in a while, but is honestly very acceptable compared to many other banks.
