I love my job but can't stand the administrators.

I have been working at Stanford University full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Prestigious name, beautiful campus & facilities, decent benefits.

Cons

Mediocre pay, VERY political, little or no respect for long-time employees. Administrators are more concerned with covering their rears and impressing superiors than they are about doing the right things. HR is a joke.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stanford is Stanford because of it's people - not because of it's policies. Take care of your people.

I have been working at Stanford University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Beautiful campus.
Time to work out in the day
    Nice people
Ability to take free classes right here on campus
Tons of places to eat on campus
Stanford pays you to not drive to work and will pay for your train-lightrail and bus passes
    Have I mentioned it's a beautiful campus?
Ability to telecommute (some departments, mine included)
Lot's of room to grow your career, learn new skills and apply them

    Cons

For the bay area, you don't earn that much money. In my opinion, that's the only con. Obviously you won't get stock like you could with some other places in the bay area but we are a university, not a tech company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Stanford University full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Best part of working at Stanford is the company of intellectuals and access to the best thinkers and researchers in the country/world. The benefits are great-- after the first year, there's more retirement benefits, and very generous health care and transport options. Stanford looks out for the well-being (physical and mental) health of their employees.

    Cons

My immediate supervisor is not the best manager as he came through the ranks of research-- he's a great thinker/researcher, but doesn't know how to delegate or give useful feedback. The PI for the project is great-- very caring and looks out for his staff/grad students.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For the middle managers-- more training on how to manage teams and give productive feedback.
