Pros

Fantastic academic environment - a place for ideas and learning.

Cons

Very hierarchical, stiffling structure - little opportunity for innovation.

Advice to Management

While senior management has large constituencies of academics, deans, and donors to whom they must cater to, they must pay attention to the talent running the university and achieve a balance between managing up and managing down.

    Pros

Great benefits. Beautiful campus. A real community instead of a corporate culture. Work with people from a broad range of backgrounds, ages, cultures, and interests. Working in support of the community instead of the shareholders. Good work-life balance. Good opportunities to work for different departments. Good opportunities for professional development (through classes and conferences).

    Cons

Salaries are low compared to industry. There are no stock options, but there is generous matching into the retirement plan. You pay for parking, and close parking is expensive and cheap parking is far away.

    Advice to Management

Show appreciation for the staff who know they could make more money in industry. Simplify the health plans.

    Pros

This is the elite of academia Profit is not the motive training and professional adv budgets are good currently college tuition benefits for children of staff is re-imbursed at 50% of Stanford tuition

    Cons

It can get political - various kingdoms I have been seeking career advancement on a technical (non managerial) track and was assured by the director 4 years ago this was possible. Well, 4 years ago I am still waiting for an update in my job title (I have increased my value via certifications and accomplishments 10x)

    Advice to Management

trickle down have an outing with your staff (besides an icecream social in the office)
