Current Employee - Administrative Associate in Stanford, CA

Pros

They value work-life balance, and provide amazing benefits including large contribution to 403(b) plan. The medical, dental and vision plans are very reasonably priced and offer great coverage. Salary seems to be a little above market. People seem to enjoy their jobs.

Cons

It can be hard to get promoted, especially within the same department. Upward mobility requires an employee to apply for a higher level job in a different department. Parking is expensive and hard to find, although they do offer free train passes to all full time employees.

    Pros

    * Can't beat the location
    * Fantastic benefits - very generous 403(b) matching, childcare/adoption/education benefits, employee education stipend, great insurance, free gym membership
    * Lots of interesting people and events coming through campus on a regular basis

    Cons

    * Not a lot of middle-management staff positions. At the institutes there are lots of low-level admin and finance staff, lots of high-level faculty directors, and not much in between.

    Current Employee - PhD Student in Stanford, CA

    Pros

    The people are great; professors are engaging, colleagues are interesting, students are highly motivated. The weather is fantastic, as is the campus (we called it the Palo Alto Country Club). Teaching these undergrads is a delight. Research may be conducted under some of the best conditions in the world. Not a bad place to be a PhD student, indeed...

    Cons

    Alas, while being a doctoral student at Stanford, one is a tenant in a mansion.. The grim realities of the job market should be considered heavily for anyone entering a PhD program, particularly in the social sciences and humanities. This is not Stanford's fault, obviously, but they could do more to arm students for an extra-academic job. Also, the pay is not as high as it seems; the cost of living around Stanford makes the seemingly high stipend borderline insufficient.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    continue developing programs for professionalization for PhD students and accept that many branches of academia are simply not very attractive for young people today
