research at Stanford

I have been working at Stanford University as an intern

Pros

creative, capable and extremely helpful colleagues and mentors. you can learn as much from the people you work with as from the actual research itself.

Cons

there is no hand-holding involved, and although people will gladly help you, you are expected to figure things out on yourself. this is great for learning but also frustrating at times.

I have been working at Stanford University full-time for more than a year

    Pros

As a postdoc researcher, your experience depends greatly on the lab you work in. At a place like Stanford, however, you will get access to some amazing resources and people as long as you don't have your head in the sand.

    Cons

The pay is not great (as all postdoc pay goes). But it's supposedly a 'training period' so suck it up.

    Pros

    Pay is quite good
Access to Stanford campus and amenities
    Relatively stress free environment

    Cons

Large percentage of employees are contractors or temps - some for longer than 3 years
    Mistakes made over and over
Stuck in positions with no ability to grow or lateral

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually hire people, implement more of a private company system of accountability and performance metrics
