I have been working at Stanford University part-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

The smart people, interesting work, decent benefits.
You get an opportunity to learn from some great professors. Not much mentorship in certain areas

Cons

Few fellows make it to professor. Just a fact of life. Not much mentorship in certain areas. It's left to someone taking an interest in you or not. If your mentor leaves or switches, forget it, you're career as a fellow is stand-still.
Poor parking, poor pay compared to private sector options.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest with fellows about career prospects. Don't try to take advantage of fellows in terms of work hours or new requirements in the middle of fellowship just because they are near-slave labor.

I have been working at Stanford University full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Amazing benefits and stability. You get to come to work with incredibly intelligent coworkers that really do keep you on your toes. The group I work in is pretty lax on working from home, which is great when you really want to focus and make progress on your current projects. They provide a massive amount of vacation and sick time as well, so there's never a feeling of being trapped.

    Cons

People never leave and very, very rarely get removed from positions. While this is sometimes a good thing, it unfortunately leads to legacy culture and lax attitudes that get in the way of forward momentum.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold people accountable for failing to meet milestones and deadlines. Hold people to higher standards and don't allow the negative influencers to poison the well.
