Former Employee - Store Associate in San Jose, CA

I worked at Staples part-time (Less than a year)

Pros

There was really not a single thing about this job that was positive save for the co-workers

Cons

Being spoken to like a child, explicit instructed how to clean a floor with a broom, as well as the purpose

Advice to Management

Hire better under-management.

Manipulation and outright lying to get you to do what they want

I have been working at Staples full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

3 manager system allows for divide and conquer approach to tasks, it also allows for a management rotation for scheduling, if your general manger actually wants to follow company policy

    Cons

company has unreal expectations on new program roll outs, and they seem to have no checks and balances of the store general managers, so they are allowed to get away with never helping out in the store but then take all the glory for the hard work of those that actually succeeded. Also the district managers lie to you to get what they want and then deny they ever said anythings, I've been witness to this happening several times in the last 4 years

    Advice to Management

beware of anything you are promised or told you are inline for a promotion, its probably a lie to get you do do something extra for them.

Great for sales and general retail experience, bad for overall culture, workload and environment.

    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Staples part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Management can be down to earth, flexible schedules, decent benefits for students and part timers.

    Cons

Too much work for being an easy tech associate and not enough pay: No incentive to really sell as there are no commissions, driving unrealistic sales goals and constantly having "the talk" despite forcing yourself to be a pushy salesperson, and kissing the ground of almost every customer, typical retail environment.

    Advice to Management

What is the point of being an easy tech? I can be a merchandiser and get the same pay rate. How about treating the easy tech right so there would be more moral, more incentive for us to be salespeople rather than just some typical retail associate. Let someone else do the labor because we are supposed to be the brains and drive in the money.
