Former Employee - General Manager in Sacramento, CA
Former Employee - General Manager in Sacramento, CA

I worked at Staples full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

There are great benefits, even for part time associates. Schedules are flexible. Worked with great people at the store level. Have great training programs, if you have the time to use them.

Cons

Expectations for sales categories too high compared to the amount of salary offered to associates.
Too big of a focus on sales to the exclusion of the things that actually make a profit. While benefits are great, salaries are low. Not enough time given to train people adequately to perform to the level that is expected

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your people more. Set realistic expectations and reward associates for making goals. Move back to a customer focused environment. Make sure you actually spend time in stores helping store managers and staff, not just coming in to make sure you look perfect then sweep out.

Former Employee - Sales Manager in Natick, MA

I worked at Staples full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Operationally sound company, lots of resources and support systems in place, compensation and benefits were commensurate with experience, new focus on training and development

    Cons

Decision making more often slow than anything, programs/ tests rolled out without proper preparation, accountability does not follow up the chain to higher level employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut out the "middle man" in decision making, realize the assets you have in your locations, make accountability something that applies to everyone, regardless of position.
