I have been working at Staples full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Within one year of working with the company, I received five promotions, all accompanied by raises. Job is easy to develop a routine with, and on the job training is available in most cases.

Cons

Stores severely understaffed, causing strain to few employees who remain being forced to pick up excess slack. In most cases, a promotion to a higher position actually means you will be performing duties of old position and current position, because your former position will not be filled.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn who your dead weight is, and when to drop them. Positions in the stores are so few as it is, do not let them continue to be filled by unmotivated workers.

I have been working at Staples full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I have had nothing but positive experience in SF Bay area market. you get weekly pay. and they seem to be not strict at all. and very flexible with your schedule. Great GM and Managers in SF.

    Cons

Top down communications from corporate or upper management seems to be a disconnect. seems to me like every other store is not on the same page. there is to many manager level positions with in one store. and no one is on the same page. always a different direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep what you are doing, Things will get better.

I have been working at Staples full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, Diverse environment, Great employees(90%), Great customers(68%), Stable company. Lots of education available, as long as you make sure to ask for it, push for it, and take charge. Part-time employees get benefits (though very limited)

    Cons

Communication is sometimes challenging from the district managers/regional managers to store managers. Retail hours, District manager is more concerned career than problem solving. Sales of extended warranties, ET services, and attachments are overly stressed and are by large the highest contributing factors to an employee's performance. Such emphasis on sales numbers can indeed be stressful. Employee hours constantly fluctuate. Often asked to do things that are not within the scope of your position. Not enough emphasis on maintaining a standard appearance or baseline cleanliness of the store. A great place if your expectations are low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Truly value your employees. The better you treat them, the better they treat the customer, the better your profit. See them as real people, and treat them how you'd want to be treated. They are people not numbers!
