I have been working at Staples full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Best in Class (vs. OMAX, ODP), High levels of professionalism, ethical, fair, Management does well in planning growth pillars & communicates them well.

    Cons

Stores run on excessivly tight payroll, Systems used for registers and kiosk sales are very slow (outdated), High levels of pressure at all levels. NO Bonus payouts this year due (2012) to missing Corporate Targets - always discussed as part of our compensation plan.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hoping that Corprorate and Executive levels have no bonus payout this year since the field does not. It would be a welcomed message to hear this message. There are some hard feelings about the "Presidents Club" trip in light of cuts needed due to economic times.

I have been working at Staples

    Pros

Staples doesn't really compensate its workers for their hard work, but, should you have a proper management team and interpersonal development as a staff, then you should have a fun and easy time working at Staples, so long as it is not back to school season. Plus, they hire young, and, from what i can tell, it's pretty easy to move up.

    Cons

As previously said, your hard work and dedication are pretty much only met with pats on the back. In the end, more and more responsibility falls on you with the more you know. People with less qualifications than you may end up being hired for more than your base pay. Sometimes, it simply doesn't seem fair and their competitors can easily pay you more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Although it's very difficult to see employees as anything other than resources which lower net profits by payroll hour, associating with your subordinates as people and trying to connect and empathize with them will almost absolutely yield better result. It increases morale and makes working significantly more tolerable, if not fun.
