Starwood Hotels & Resorts – “Work should be merit-based, not union-based

Feb 20, 2009

2.0

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Culinary in Cincinnati, OH:   (Current Employee)

Pros

They are unionized, so once you're in the system, it is very difficult to be fired. The pay is fantastic with annual raises.

Cons

They are unionized, so once someone is in, it is very difficult for that person to be fired. The worst employees will still be there, making the same amount of money as you, even if your work is faster, better, more detailed, etc. Everyone makes the same wage, regardless of contribution to the job.
Also, if someone has worked there longer than you, that person will get the hours due to seniority, even if that person stands around all day and only works when the boss is watching.

Advice to Senior Management

There are so many managers that one would think we would be supervised. In actuality, I work most days without seeing a manager around and could do anything I wanted to, if I chose to. I don't, but others on the same shift do, leaving extra work for everyone else.
