Pros

Cheap hotel stays make this job great. Employees are offered the chance to get rooms at $29/$49/$89 at every Starwood hotel, which makes it great if you like to travel. Most of the employees are very friendly as well.

Cons

Since the economic downturn, senior management has chosen some "interesting" ways to cope involving mass layoffs that have been fostering a culture of fear. The impression is that if you don't work a 12 hourr day, you're are next on the chopping block.

Advice to Management

I understand that cost-cutting is necessary, but explanation and logic as opposed to secrecy and randomness would make Starwood Vacation Ownership a great place to work again.

    Pros

nice friendly managers they will not bother you on your day off

    Cons

They will and do hire anyone, telling you about all the money you can make. In reality its a numbers game but the numbers are just not there. This could be due in partial to the economy.
Pretty much they just need warm bodies to sit in the lobby of their hotels and perform customer service for minimum wage. Once you do get someone to go on tour, half the time they don't show up or there is a computer problem when you try too book the tour. This make it very hard to break commission.
They over hire and instead of firing you they just slowly wear you off the schedule. They have treated me as good as they can but I can see that all employees are expendable. No one makes money unless you have been working there forever because they give those pepole special shifts and a different selling system. I don't see how anyone can survive unless you want to get paid part time money for full-time work.
Also - they change things every couple of weeks and dont really tell anyone.

    Advice to Management

Pull out of the dead locations and shorted the team so at least some people can earn a living. Also, pay more attention to who you hire

Excellent company with amazing employee base that seem to carry the company without executive leadership.

    Pros

Flexibility in work-life balance, travel, and wonderful people to serve and work around.

    Cons

Senior and executive management has been lacking in direction since the loss of its CEO in 2006. Senior IT management has been with the company for more than 20 years. The lack of diversity in experience has made them very myopic with respect to business decisions.

    Advice to Management

They absolutely MUST bring in new, fresh and capable talent from the outside to run Information Technology. This view seems to be shared amongst all of my coworkers.
