I worked at State Farm full-time for more than a year

Pros

Helping customers navigate unexpected day to day problems, developing relationships with customers, relatively easy work.

Cons

Regional management has its head up its ass, management at an agency level is run like a frat house. Always aware that your employment is based on the mood of the agent.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Modify new agent contract so as to not encourage blatant frat boy behavior in local agents (adjust SMCV, etc).

    Changing for the better

I worked at State Farm full-time

    Pros

Recent changes in the company have a positive outlook. Becoming more competitive, asking IT analysts to do a little more. Starting to eliminate virtual days for some which are a joke. Pay, benefits, job security, and less formal work environment a plus.

    Cons

Still a major problem with employee accountability. High manager turnover yeilds a clean slate for both productive and poor/complacent employees on a regular basis. Most managers not familiar with the work. No appreciation or reward for IT certifications.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please realize the value in keeping managers committed to their teams for a length of time. Otherwise they have no vested interest in growing the team and developing analysts.

I have been working at State Farm full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

They are starting to become extremely forward thinking despite their typically risk averse nature. They also provide some decent benefits, like a pension plan and a employee park with free putt putt, water park, and a bunch more.

    Cons

Lower end of the pay scale comparatively; as a working professional I make 1/2 what an intern does at Google or Microsoft. Too much politics involved in hiring, not enough skill review, and lots of "pass the trash". The managers who are innovative and don't seem to get a fare shake and are treated as if they don't understand or have their heads in the cloud.
