I have been working at State of Alaska full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

As a Veterans Representative I work daily with American heroes. These heroes are fully functional and have tremendous transferrable skills that employers need to recognize and make a place for them in the workplace. The employers need to pursue the Apprenticeship approach to train an individual who would fit into their culture but lacks some certification or entry level degree.

Cons

Accounting to the "bean counters" that much of my job is intangible and cannot be measured in individual tasks and specific results that pertain only to Alaska.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow a professional career employee latitude to work out of the box and be creative.

    Cons

No bonuses, overtime is hard to come by but you are expected to work more hours with out pay (only in some divisions).

I have been working at State of Alaska

    Pros

The pay and benefits are very good for an 8-5 job. Job security is good. It is not an overly high stress work environment for non-management positions.

    Cons

There is a union, which makes it difficult for above average workers to get raises faster than standard longevity. It is difficult to get rid of underachievers. As with any gov't employer, there are politics involved with the change of administrations every few years. These generally do not impact job security if you are not in an appointed position, but it does result in directional shifts of policies and missions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None. Mgmt encounters the sames pros and cons, plus deal with higher levels of stress related to job security with administration changes.
