I worked at State of Delaware as a contractor (More than 3 years)

Pros

An opportunity to do work that truly does have an impact. Work with an amazing variety of people from all walks of life who all have differing career goals. Gain experience with technologies that are sometimes cutting edge and sometimes greatly out of date.

Cons

Politics are the background noise of this industry. As a contractor there is always the risk that as the political winds blow so could the renewal of your contract. Government agencies are often hesitant to change.

I have been working at State of Delaware full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

State benefits (Health Insurance, Vacation, Sick leave, State/Federal holidays, etc.). Merit rules and the politically-motivated management culture lead to unprecedented job security. You aren't fired in this organization. You are promoted, appointed, or reassigned.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Empower and support your employees. Manage state government like a business rather than a clubhouse. Be honest with your staff and create an environment of trust rather than fear.
