I worked at State of Georgia Department of Human Resources full-time for more than a year

Pros

Very flexible with scheduling. Interacts with many different types/classes of people.

Cons

Too much work for the amount of pay. Co-workers worse than clients. Co-workers way too gossipy and unprofessional.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide better training once a new worker is on the actual job site and don't just rely on the computerized training that only captures the theory of the job.

I worked at State of Georgia Department of Human Resources as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

The best reason to work for the State is the pension. So if you can endure it until retirement that's a pretty good reason. That is honestly the only "pro". Really.

    Cons

Everything else. If you have worked your entire career in the private sector be VERY careful about going to state government. You will not be able to relate at best and at worst the mentality of State employees will infuriate you.

Also, if you are accustomed to being promoted based on merit, if you enjoy getting raises, if you are familiar with starting projects and actually finishing them then maybe state government is not for you.

Workplace bullying is allowed and even some in senior "management" are active participants.

"Management" are the most incompetent, self-serving, short-sighted group of "managers" I have ever had the displeasure to encounter. EVER. If you come in with skills that would be valued elsewhere, you will be a threat at the state.

There is a general atmosphere of hopelessness. There are some good people working there who have just given up based on the environment and they've been there too long to leave.

It is laughable that they actually require college degrees for most of those low-paying positions. Take your degree and RUN. If you are new, leave. If you are considering it, don't.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get off your high horses and run it like a business.
