I have been working at State of Illinois as a contractor (less than an year)

Pros

I really enjoy my co-workers and the casual/laid-back feel. We get our work done, but we don't feel too stressed either.

Cons

May be difficult transitioning to the private sector after an extended time in a public position. It will take awhile to get acclimated to the private pace of things.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nothing. Great place

I am totally disheartened at the total lack of management at level of senior management.

I have been working at State of Illinois part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I find it hard to even come up with a single positive thing about this department.

    Cons

I have experienced a lack of communication on the part of the whole department. There is an inability to lead and incompetence on the part of senior manager. I had high hopes for contributing to the team environment, but can't seem to get the Executive Director to take an active interest in the program. She has no interest in leading any of the programs
within her department. She comes in at 10:00 am and then leaves for 2-3 hour lunches.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should strive to actually learn about the programs supposedly being supervised by them.

I worked at State of Illinois full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Medical Insurance and great benefits received on the first day of the job. 3 percent raise every July. Co-workers are good.

    Cons

Too much work and too much multitasking. Managers most of the hinder workers instead of help them. Too much conflict between management and rank and file.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    too much micromanagement.
