Pros

Good people, a good chance for promotions, an organization that really tries to do its best and is accountable to taxpayers' money.

Cons

You can feel like a sausage in the grinder because there is not a lot of variety in this job. But, you can definitely learn a ton at Dept of Workforce Services.

Advice to Management

I am struck by the amount of turnover for Specialists, especially given the large amount of time and money spent to train for a difficult job. Please try to hold onto people longer and work on improving staff morale.

    Pros

Benefits: Good Time Off, Good Retirement Plans, Good Health Care Overtime is compensated Overtime has to be approved by upper management which keeps work weeks typically at 40 hours. Training and mentoring occurs on a regular basis.

    Cons

Some management tries to prevent you from using comp-time earned through overtime. Technical staff are not paid as much as found in private sector. Budgets are always shrinking, so raises are rare. No Paid Technical training. Multiple Departments have different agendas which sometime conflict with each other.

    Pros

Working for the State of Utah generally provides stable employment, and your coworkers will typically be wonderful people, at least in my experience.

    Cons

Working for the State of Utah historically has had great government benefits: health care, defined pension benefit plan, etc. however these have been steadily eroded by the legislature in recent years.

    Advice to Management

The State of Utah is doing better financially than the vast majority of State governments in the country, so the recent erosion in salary and benefits is puzzling. If continued, the State will accelerate the loss of institutional memory and quality employees.
