I worked at State of Washington full-time for less than a year

Pros

Love the independence of the job is and working outdoors in the summer is nice. Pay is not too bad considering the job duties. Working 4-10's is a bonus. The supervisors were really pleasant to work with and very enthusiastic about their jobs.

Cons

Not enough time to set the traps and plan where they should go, way too rushed. A lot of time is spent at home beyond the 10 paid hours making traps and planning placements. Time management becomes easier mid-way through and at the end of the season. The job can get monotonous after while but it ends soon enough since it is a seasonal job.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps add at least a week to the beginning of the season so traps can be made and placements planned before the actual placement begins.

I have been working at State of Washington full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Civil service - work feels more meaningful. The development work is on par with private companies. However, it's not about the bottom line and net profit.

    Cons

Work is on par with the private industry. However, it pays much less.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more competitive of salary to retain talent.

Former Employee - Geologist in Olympia, WA

I worked at State of Washington full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The benefits, even with the union dues required now, make up for any slight in salary as well as a fair amount of job security. It all depends on the agency and their culture and then who your supervisor is. The supervisor can make or break your job satisfaction.

    Cons

politics and budgeting on the backs of employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

dont pretend to care if you dont
