Steak n Shake – “When a Shareholder runs a company Employees loose.”
Pros
If you are looking for just a paycheck Steak N Shake is the place to be. Coming in as a server or production depending on the store they are pretty good at allowing you time off. As production you are looking at starting around 7 an hour a server 2.13 plus tips. As a server you have the benifit of having a larger section then most resturants and the table turn around is pretty quick.
Cons
When I started with Steak N Shake it stressed promotion from within. I was able to work my way up as a server to manager in just two years. Granted I put in a lot of over time and kept on nagging my managers to crosstrain me on other stations, but I climbed the latter pretty quick. But then this new CEO came in and only focuses on the shareholders. A lot of servers who have been with the company over 10 years or so who have had several payincreases are now getting paycuts and capped. The managers are on pay freezes. Employee benifits have been slashed, it use to be after 6months of working over 32hours a week you could receive United Health Care insurance, which is the same that management receives, but no longer. You can get starbridge from day one. Which does nothing more then help you receive a low copay at appointments nothing more. Entry level management use to be salaried starting in the mid 30's now they are hiring people in at 9 an hour.
Advice to Senior Management
You get what you pay for when it comes to employee's. When you take away benifits and cut pay you loose good people.
