Steak n Shake – “The new CEO of Steak N Shake only cares about the shareholders, And not the workers who keep him employed!

Steak n Shake Service Trainer in Bloomington, IN:   (Current Employee)

Pros

The co workers can be a great help during busy times, stepping up to the plate when things get hairy. The teamwork at our store is awesome. The pay was good for the first 5 years with standard pay increases. Paid vacation, And great health care. employee meal discounts, As well as a great location. We have our busy times, as well as slow periods. Most managers are easy to get along with. It's nice to be open 24/7 and the ability to change your work times is very flexible. The training put into new employees is top notch. All around it is/was a great place to work. Steak N shake mostly caters to college students so it takes a certain person to be able to handle rowdy kids one minute, And a family of the next.

Cons

Downsides are what is going on with the company as of late. When the new CEO took over, We were told we would take a %10 cut on our employee discount to help afford new uniforms that were badly needed. After almost a year, there still is no new uniforms and management have informed us there will be none anytime soon. However, Our discount remains at the cut rate.

Health care was also cut. We used to be able to get what the managers were on at a fair fee, But they took that away and offer starbridge instead. I opted out of health care all together and somehow they kept me on the management insurance. In my opinion I believe that once they saw they couldn't bully or threaten the starbrige that they caved in and allowed me to keep my coverage. Anyways a lot of good people lost their health care and/or quit because of the change.

I started out as a server making $4.20 an hr which is darn good. I worked my way to Service trainer in one year. In the past 4 plus years now I have been given raises to my current rate of $8.75 hr. I was bumped to $7.50 once I made trainer. Today I'm told that there is now a cap on wages and that my wage will be cut to $4 an hr. 20cent less that what I made starting out almost 6 yrs ago. At the same time a fellow server on night shift keeps her pay because sometimes she has to helps out on production. [Which is a once in awhile thing] How is that fair? I also hear that cooks will be taking a cut as well although I'm not sure how much. Everything is being kept on the hush hush till after Little 500 so that they don't lose any employees during the busiest time of the year.

Thanks Steak N Shake! Nice looking out for your hard working employees.

Advice to Senior Management

When you turn your backs on the hard working employees that keep the wheels rolling, It's only a matter of time before it comes to a halt. Thanks for turning the "Best job I've had" into "Just another job"
