Teaching snowboarding, I improved my riding and my service soft-skills. Fun, but not a way to make a living.

I have been working at Steamboat Ski Resort part-time (more than an year)

Pros

Free ski pass, lots of perks & deals, amazing training for ski/snowboard instructors (as good as or better than PSIA/AASI cert 1), free ride & teaching improvement clinics, fun atmosphere & peers, open-door management.

Cons

Pay rate is low and it's hard to earn more as a newbie (almost everyone has a second job in this town)

Current Employee - Ski Instructor in Steamboat Springs, CO

I have been working at Steamboat Ski Resort full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I am on snow nearly every day, learning, and helping others learn, how to enjoy the time spent on the ski hill even more! There is paid and unpaid training available to me to help improve my own skills regarding skiing, and to help improve my skills as an instructor. I am fortunate to get my ski pass for free, as well as passes for my children and additional comps and half-price lift tickets to share with friends and family when they visit.

    Cons

Lack of health insurance coverage for seasonal employees is terrible. Sometimes, during really bad storms, it can get very cold and nasty out. I have to be out, with my guests, no matter what. That can be no fun.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer health insurance benefits to seasonal staff.

Meeting interesting people from all over the US.

    Cons

Low pay, no breaks, pay below minimum wage, and no benefits.
Most employees qualify for Medicaid so Intrawest does not have to pay for health Insurance the citizens of Colorado do!
Cost of housing is extremely high most they all require First, Last and Security deposit before you move in , even employee housing to expensive.
Cost of living in Steamboat is high closest town with any decent services or shopping is 2 hours away in Sliverthorne/Dillon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wrong people in charge of the wrong depts.
Hire an outside consultant or someone with experience to update uniforms.
