Pros

Decent benefits (although the 401k match was terrible), professional environment, decent base salary. Strong intercompany pride. Ability to get out of the office and lunch prospective candidates/clients on the company dime.

Cons

Horrendous work/life balance - usually spent at least 10 hours a day in the office. Commission structure is very poor. It requires a great deal of activity in order to make good money. In this market, that just isn't possible. Horrible turnover as I saw 7 people come and go during my tenure there. Management really doesn't care, just refill the seat. Mgmt doesn't do enough to retain good, or potentially good, employees. You really are just a number.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your people are the one's that make you money. Treat them as such...

    Pros

    Typical agency. Most people transfer out of their sister companies (Aerotek and TEKsystems) becuase they are lured by a promise of untold riches and golden telephones. These people usually enter agency right out of college and don't have any real corporate exposure. The company's strategy has always been to attract established professionals to recruit in their respective field. In order to do so, SJA needs to paint the same rosy picture of untold riches and golden telephones to get people in seats. After the first reality check, retention becomes the company's primary Achilles' Heel, because the compensation structure is such where success is unusual.

    Cons

    Poor benefits, poor work / life balance, poor stability, questionable ethics, misleading expectations.

    Level with prospective employees on expectations, and tighten-up company-wide policy and ethical standards.

    I have been working at Stephen James Associates

    Pros

    First job out of college which allowed for a lot of business development. Strong training program that will transfer to any future career opportunity. Company culture is fun and energetic. Growth and advancement opportunities. Base salary + commission. 5k raise after a year.

    Cons

    Sales environment. Longer work weeks than the average 9-5. Takes about 6 months to start seeing commission. Cold calling. Customer centric service can be stressful. Technical recruiting can be challenging to learn due to terminology.
