I have been working at Stratton Mountain Ski Resort full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Stratton offers amazing skiing and riding, and many opportunities to take advantage of your pass. I have so much fun working here each winter and hope to continue my relationship with this mountain.

Cons

It gets really windy on Stratton so winter can be brutal. Sometimes the odd guest is determined to have a bad time on vacation.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please dont stop giveing the lifties ride breaks, morale is so important to a positive guest experience.

Great place to work - but understand compensation, culture and employee limitations

I have been working at Stratton Mountain Ski Resort part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The Stratton ski school enjoys a great reputation both in the northeast and nationally. The adult school supervisors are well respected in the industry. There are a lot of awesome instructors, collegiality among the rank and file, supportive environment and genuine commitment to the resort guests. Stratton has an employee cafeteria that is subsidized by the resort and the food is actually pretty decent. Part and full-time ski school employees qualify for a free season ski pass...

    Cons

If you make a real commitment to Stratton, you need to understand a few realities. First, resort management is beholden to their corporate overseers to show an aggressive profit. That being said, management is pressed to maintain the status quo (i.e. tightly control costs) around the resort and therefore doesn't invest in game changing innovation, compensation or enlightened ways of doing things. Understand that the chief winter investment is snow making - not resort infrastructure. The ski school makes a profit, but sadly employee compensation is stubbornly average or below industry standards - and that's not likely to change. Puts additional pressure from instructors to cultivate as many tips from guests as possible. Despite a typically affluent Stratton customer base, tips can ebb and flow with the economy or other factors like limited compensation for group lessons. While instructor perks include a season lift ticket and subsidized food and beverage, the real pay-off is building your portfolio of private lessons business. That's where the action is and where you'll gain the most satisfaction and $$ as an employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to take a detailed examination of ski resort employee compensation and make needed adjustments accordingly. Management makes a big presence with moral boosting presentations at the annual fall employee orientation. But they then fall into an invisible mode during the entire season relying on employee surveys at the end to find out what's going on. The top manager was never seen in the ski school building by employees the entire last season. That's unacceptable. Heighten your presence around the resort. Interact with employees. Make them feel appreciated. Talk to guests. You'll be amazed what you'll learn. We are in the people business. Lead the way ...

I have been working at Stratton Mountain Ski Resort part-time

    Pros

Fellow ski instructors are fantastic. For the most part it's a collaborative and collegial environment, everyone is teaching because they want to be there. The staff side of the ski school is friendly and they are willing to accommodate special requests for leave or an emergency. I would highly recommend the Stratton ski school for a part time, weekend pursuit.

    Cons

Don't expect to be paid much, remember, they're paying you to be on the slopes and you get a season pass. If it's a slow day with students and you're new, you may not get a class all day but you still have to be present for the line-up unless released for the entire day. There's no pay if you don't teach. However that gives you time to ski!
