I worked at Suburban Propane full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good supervision ,above average training program and very friendly work environment.

    Cons

Most of your overtime comes during the worst time of the year, winter. During the warm months lucky to get 40 hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When distributing out raises, don't give the lions share to the employees who have been there the longest. The newer people usually work just as hard or even harder.

    I worked at Suburban Propane

    Pros

Best in industry training, hands down. The pay and benefits are solid, the staff at the field level are consistently good quality people, ie technicians, drivers reps etc.

    Cons

This is a company that is in the process of redefining themselves from their roots as a collection of small locally operated mom and pop propane dealers into a centrally managed corporation. The problem is they have no idea how to accomplish that. As a result, management at the regional level is solely focused on hitting bonus targets for profit margin and have driven the prices up to laughably uncompetitive levels. As customers flock to the doors, the prices get higher -rinse and repeat. A manager at Suburban is responsible for everything from taking customer complaints to delivering fuel to sales calls to repairing dispensers along with everything in between. The general attitude of the employees is terrible because they have watched the business deteriorate over the years. I would not recommend this as a place to work for anyone except for those looking for some good quality paid training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to take a serious look at where your business is and where you want to be. Suburban will continue losing market share as long as the company continues to fool itself that the quality of service is worth 40% more than your competition. There are some good quality managers at the field level, but the regional management is destroying your business. With total customers down 20% since 09, and net margins slipping from 17% to 8% in the same time frame you are now losing both the war and the battle. Suburban is a 'potentially great' company that is headed for the dumpster without some significant top down changes.
