Pros

Good benefits, market leadership (albeit in a small and underdeveloped market), good engineer-level personnel. A lot of good individuals to work with at the company both in North America and abroad. Positive cashflow leads to financial stability that is a major improvement over the competition, hopefully this will lead to sustained profitability soon. New product offerings coming online that should expand SumTotal's presence in the market significantly. The compensation is close to competitive for the positions and time off is very generous. Also the flex scheduling is very helpful in overcoming a lot of the transportation issues that exist near the major offices.

Cons

C-level staff and senior management do not have a long term plan or vision for the company, lack of thought leadership in the market, competing priorities and poor execution lead to lots of emergencies and escalations. Always behind the curve technically and never the first to bring a solution to market. Products are overly complicated and extremely buggy. Customers are often irate and 'escalation' is the word of choice for everything in SumTotal. Because the senior management is unable to prioritize escalations in any way resources are worked nights, weekend and vacations are canceled on a regular basis. Work life balance is not good for operational teams and morale is extremely low cross the whole company leading to a lot of defensive positioning internally.

Advice to Management

They need to back out of the fire fighting and focus on generating a long term (more than 3 quarters) plan for the company. They also need to hire a legitimate CTO that can help expand our product vision and innovation. Realistically moving more of the key roles back to North America would also be an improvement now that India is reaching closer to income parity and the dollar has weakened so much.

    Pros

Great People. Exciting new businesses including talent management.

    Cons

Work Life balance is an issue in every department. Clear business and technology strategy are hard to get clarified and there is no cohesive vision shared with the employees.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent with the employees in the company. Bring in someone to drive a cohesive technology strategy. Clarify the business strategy with all employees and focus less on the buzz words and more on the true value we believe we can deliver to customers.

  2. Dysfunctional at best, poor QA at worst

    Pros

Flexible work environment. Short of any other pros for this VC funded company acquired by a content player.

    Cons

Poor training for an LMS company. Poor knowledge sharing. Acquisition upheaval. High turnover. Poor quality product. Not multi-tenant SaaS.

    Advice to Management

Sumtotal is not a simple product. Architecture is old in the tooth with a dated UI. It can be a complex sale so going from selling content to sellng a feature rich, quality poor, LMS will be a challenge. Challenger sales for Skillsoft can not be applied to acquired solution suite.
