Mom and pop became 'big business'. Big business still acts like mom and pop.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

This place could be SO MUCH MORE! Advice: Focus on social media, electronic media and growing what you already have prior to investing in new offerings/products. Focus on how to be a big business and get out of the mom and pop mentality. Focus on the employees you have and stop looking for the next best thing when you do not train the employees on staff. The talent at the home office is EXCELLENT but are poorly utilized. SBM is more likely to layoff employees they think are eating up the payroll than to groom their talent and produce lasting results. This employer really needs to invest in experts to guide the executive committee and train the upper management.

There's potential here... but right now, it's still just potential.

I have been working at Summit Business Media

    Pros

    Convenient to Cincinnati
Great work environment: nice facility, casual dress code
    Many long-term 15+ years employees
    Excellent flex office hours
    Generous and flexible PTO
    Engaging work responsibilities
Quarterly company-wide meetings where upper management shares financials, strategies, company overview with all employees

    Cons

The PAY! Currently on a 1-year+ furlough- already low salary reduced and pay freeze
    Benefits severely cut
Lots of "re-alignment" which causes some upheaval and lost productivity
    Several layoffs
With shorter "furlough" work week and fewer people there's a much greater workload for employees, with less time, fewer resources, and peanuts pay.
    Morale is beginning to suffer
Business practices are a bit old-fashioned- lack of real innovation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company has the potential to be a great company to work for- we have great people, great products, and many possibilities for growth. But employees need to be rewarded... or at least be able to afford to work for the company. Even success or merit-based compensation or rewards would be better than nothing. And management should not expect the company to grow doing business the way we did 10 years ago... now's the time to innovate. Soon, many of the strongest and brightest employees may begin looking for greener pastures.

First few years were great, with current management, not so much.

    Pros

Flexible hours. Continuing to try new approaches.

    Cons

Upper management no longer knows the employees, and the people at the company who actually do the best work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know the employees, and their opinions and duties before making decisions that affect them.
