I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

- The opportunity to work with capable, creative professionals. - Learning new skills. - Doing work on a large scale, involving global communities and thousands of end user customers. - Challenging, interesting work.

Cons

- Employee ranking system on a curve - couldn't (per the ranking sytem) have all excellent or all poor workers in a group. - Complacency by some employees resulting in decreased productivity, morale. - Inexperienced senior management after Scott McNealy was no longer at the reins. Management by whim in some cases. Haven't worked there since oracle purchased the company.

Advice to Management

Manage to a greater degree based on results and customer feedback.

I worked at Sun Microsystems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and opportunities for career advancement if you are able to navigate the hyper competitive culture.

    Cons

At every level of this company you will find backbiting and gossip. HR representatives are often the worst offenders. The gossip mongers are typically slackers who target the highest producers and try to harass them out of the company.

    Advice to Management

Lots of dead wood in the rank and file, wasting major time on gossip. Lots of political maneuvering in management.

    Pros

Ability to work from home or telecommute

    Cons

Many systems still use Solaris, which for the most part is extremely dated
