Current Employee - Account Manager  in  New York, NY
Current Employee - Account Manager in New York, NY

Pros

Cant say there any "good" reasons at the present other than the fact that this company generally cares about its employees and treats them well. It was more so under Scott McNealy

Cons

Lack of opportunity, aging products and lay-offs around every corner!

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop retreading the middle managers that have not performed and better/greater accountability for these managers.

Good place to work, but you must stay on top of layoffs and overall business climate.

Current Employee - Program Manager  in  Pleasanton, CA
Current Employee - Program Manager in Pleasanton, CA

    Pros

Flexible work location including work from home is a big advantage. Sun is very flexible that way, and the Bay Area campus' are nicely setup if you need to go to one for a meeting or just want to work from one. Benefits and compensation are good, and fairness/respect for individuals is a key benefit.

    Cons

Layoffs are pretty frequent. Now due to economic downturn the announced layoffs may be only the start. Naturally working from home can have implications and is not for everyone, but if you like it, Sun is very good. Downsides are that there is still a culture of Microsoft being the "evil empire", although that has been tempered of late. The problem is that most MS products are not allowed.

At present Sun has had too much revenue expectation on large servers, and the economy is saying go to more smaller ones. This presents some business challenges for Sun today. The challenges are met presently with layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep employees informed, and trim middle management where possible.

Current Employee - Finance Manager in Broomfield, CO

    Pros

Flexabile work environment, lots of oppurtunties for career growth, A broad range of products and markets to explore and learn. First company I have been with that truly has their eye on the long term and short term versus only worrying about the current quarter.

    Cons

Big, slow, resistant to change. Lots of different departments that do not always communicate well. Systems and tools need serious improvement to be competitive with the rest of the high tech competitiors. Employee skill development focuses mainly on "on the job" experiance which causes alot of employees to be behind on the current best practices and tools available.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop always checking the box on goals of the executives, they pay us to think through their choices and challange them when appropiate
