Pros

Industry leading technology/Innovation and entrepreneurial spirit-company -well positioned with open source products-JAVA, MYSQL, Solaris 10, ZFS-just need to monetize this IP. Benefits are good and many smart people. X64 sales are driving business in new areas including linux, windows and VMware-but margins are poor. The challenge is to monetize open source IP and turn it into real $$$. Cloud computing will take years to recognize any real monetary benefit but need it to compete.

Cons

very bureacratic, political-senior management messaging is missing and the board of directors has shown little leadership. Now that Southeastern Asset Mgt owns 25%, you can expect changes-hopefully for the better. Stock price has gone down the tubes since the reverse stock split and morale is low due to uncertainty and announced layoffs.

Advice to Management

Never forget that people are the lifeblood of the company-need to reward them for performance. Otherwise, you will quickly find yourself with only mediocre people that will only be able to accomplish mediocre things. Cost cutting can help in the short term, but you are seriously harming the prospects for Sun's future.

    Pros

Sun was a very exciting place to work up until the last few years; leading technology, people who wanted to change things, and opportunities

    Cons

Currently I don't think as highly of the senior management; Jonathan is a very smart man but he doesn't have the leadership and management skills to turn the company around. It's very political right now, and the company is trying to figure out where it wants to be

    Advice to Management

    Bring in an experienced CEO

    Pros

Sun permits work from home for some departments. Sun provides excellent benefits and salary. Sun is open to learning new technologies, especially open source software

    Cons

There is a general lack of competence of upper management for software. Software tools are still considered as second class citizens to hardware. Promotions only occur for political reasons. From my experience and a few others at Sun, managers are only concerned for the own job security. If their subordinates make the manager look good then the employee will get promoted. Or management promotes just to make themselves look good.

    Advice to Management

Marketing needs to make long term decisions on which software products to develop, maintain and make revenue. Consider all departments as important to Sun's business. And reward employees who go above and beyond.
