Pros

The salary was satisfying and there are a lot of things to learn within the company as well as opportunities to learn new technologies. Especially for a fresh out of college student Sun offers lots of new opportunities and they allow you time to fit in with the culture within the company. With recent Sun acquisitions there are very many new opportunities, especially within the MySQL departments.

Cons

There are a lot of management levels and sometimes communication can sometimes be extraneous. Also, some of the cooler, better jobs are only available within the big Sun locations and there are not very many engineering locations. Most locations are sales and support.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what your are corrently doing and giving employees time and space to learn and grow.

    Pros

Able to work on latest technology, cool R&D, good benefits

    Cons

Lack of communication, execution is mediocre, lots of processes, politics getting more and more prevalent and right now the morale is not good, rumors flying about more layoffs, what will be said in the earnings calls, senior staff, board of directors etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start running your groups like a business, reduce the number of directors and VPs, promote people that have accomplished something, think about your customers, get connected to the market and business. Let engineers build products, let the product teams composed of various groups make business decisions. Give more voice to marketing and product management.

    Pros

Flexible, recognizing deliverable completed. Good friendly environment, very supportive for most of it, though there always are some bad apples in any bag.

    Cons

Overall strategy is a bit cloudy - it really competes across the spectrum of silicon valley companies - but that is not secret. If it could focus on execution on some of the core strategies... personally, I think there are too many people still...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

See above. Company needs to assess core strategy based on the strength and weakness it already has - it cannot bolster all weakness across the board for all the strategies it has. A little focus, and reward for well executed strategy will go a long way.
