Great job for a fresh out of college student: given opportunities for growth both in the company and in personal life.

Pros

The salary was satisfying and there are a lot of things to learn within the company as well as opportunities to learn new technologies. Especially for a fresh out of college student Sun offers lots of new opportunities and they allow you time to fit in with the culture within the company. With recent Sun acquisitions there are very many new opportunities, especially within the MySQL departments.

Cons

There are a lot of management levels and sometimes communication can sometimes be extraneous. Also, some of the cooler, better jobs are only available within the big Sun locations and there are not very many engineering locations. Most locations are sales and support.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what your are corrently doing and giving employees time and space to learn and grow.

    Pros

Extreme flexible working hours. You can come to office at 2pm and go home at 5pm. Nobody knows. You can work from home for months and never come to office. Nobody cares. There are some very smart engineers in the company. You almost never see people got fired.

    Cons

Low morale. Low productivity. The company is not making the best products in the market. Way too many bad ideas from the upper management. EVPs, VPs and directors neither have global vision nor global experiences. Half of the offices are empty. The Work-from-home program set people free for too long. Company has lost many talents due to low stock price.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's not easy to turn around Sun. Clean up the hardware and software product lines (too many dup products) and then the product teams. Drop hardware products that don't make enough money. Cancel free software products that have few users.

We spent too much money on Java. Donate it to the open source community.

Marketing. Marketing. If you don't do marketing, you can't sell.

Rewarding and Frustrating at the same time.

I have been working at Sun Microsystems

    Pros

The best reason to work for Sun is the ability to work from home. This saves me quite a bit of time and money each month. Having young children at home the flexible work hours is also a big plus.

    Cons

Some of the downsides of working at Sun include the frequent reorganizations we seem to go through every year. Each time this happens it's very distracting for all in the company and it usually takes a couple of months for everyone to get back into their new roles and responsibilities following each reorganization. The depressed stock price is also a frustrating factor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in advertising to promote Sun. Do a better job of explaining our strategy to existing and potential new customers.
