I have been working at Sun Trading full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Sun has been very successful in expanding teams and products traded in New York. Management highlighted the strategic importance of this location when the office first opened. This is proving to be the case. While similarly situated firms are downsizing - Sun is successfully expanding.

Cons

Given the number of expansion efforts there is a risk of failure but I'm confident with effective planning that Sun can integrate all of these efforts successfully.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Positive and constructive dialogue between the various offices is key to success. Management and team leaders from Chicago need to be engaged with the teams in New York to ensure success.

    "Diversification and growth"

I have been working at Sun Trading

    Pros

The company has been successful on extending its trading strategies into new geographies and asset classes. Recent acquisitions have provided for new capabilities and an office in NYC.

Success has provided growth opportunities and management is making the right moves to navigate through a changing regulatory environment. Successful recruiting efforts are paying dividends to continue growth in the future.

    Cons

The company is probably the most institutional of the proprietary trading firms. It takes compliance, risk management, and control very seriously. If you are not willing to work in this type of environment then you may become frustrated. The flip side is successful trading strategies are nurtured and resourced at the expense of under performing strategies or teams.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to balance innovation and growth with risk management and control.

Sun's attempts at entering options reveals the firm's faults. Sun cannot add value to options trading and keeps trying.

I worked at Sun Trading full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Unsure actually what the pros are. Sun doesn't seem to provide much else besides an office and infrastructure. No developers to improve the purchased business. No real value added.

    Cons

Like most institutionalized software companies, there exist managers who don't realize what its strengths were and so all the important decisions are made by the wrong people and decline becomes inevitable. The same could be said for the companies they purchased. Sun purchased Toro Trading for X millions of dollars, the segment has since disbanded, left elsewhere, and probably net negative trading.
-Unnecessary fees charged to trading divisions to increase the firm's % share of revenue. Kind of a dirty practice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Everywhere in finance, the problem is the same. Out of touch older people with no trading/technology skills running a technology firm.
