Generally good company, with some short-sighted employment policies

I worked at SunPower (San Jose, CA) full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

As a maker & installer of high efficiency PV panels, they have a good product. They are vertically integrated, controlling everything from the R&D on new cells to the manufacturing, shipping and installation. But they have to shoot for high profit margins to pay for the R&D, which may make it more difficult to compete.

    Cons

Much of their hiring is temp workers via Aerotek, even at the Project Mgmt level. This gives them flexibility to expand & contract, but erodes any sense of company loyalty. They end up training people who may often be let go within a few months or a year, only to have to find new people to hire and train later--while their former employees move on to work for the competition. While I appreciate receiving the training and the experience, it is hard to imagine that this is a very good long-term way of doing business. Also, high-efficiency, high-cost panels are unattractive to client who have plenty of roof space or ground space. They have plans to bring the costs down in the next year or two--it will be interesting to see if they are able to reduce costs faster than their competitors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on long term company development; less on the short term quarterly profit report to the shareholders.
