I have been working at Sungevity

    Pros

    * real commitment to work/life balance. You may take time off, or leave the office before dark, without being considered a slacker

    * real commitment to diverse hiring. It's great to see the range of skin colors, ages, and genders here.

    * Danny and Birchy are genuine and in it for the long haul. They're not your usual fast-talking Bay Area startup founders.

    Cons

    * the worst aspects of corporate and startup environments, mixed together. Think soul-deadening cubicles with immature, loud co-workers making your day hell.

    * unstable financial base. Any all-hands meeting could mean a layoff.

    * A lot of people resting on laurels they earned ages ago. You'll have to support outdated practices because none of the team leads gets their butt kicked by continuing education.

    * the answer to everything seems to be, "let's hold a meeting!"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * require every single employee to take at least one class in their area of supposed expertise every year. Knowledge acquired ten or even five years ago is useless in a fast-moving industry.

    * don't try to cram everybody into the same kind of workspace. Not every job can function in a veal-fattening pen with ringing phones all around.

    * as another reviewer pointed out, there's no obvious career advancement track. Ask employees what that would mean to them, then implement it.

    * don't let anyone force you to consider the diversity hiring as "nice to have." It's one of Sungevity's best points.

    * nobody outside management should have to attend more than 2 meetings a week. Reprimand the people who require more.
