Former Employee - Premise Media Consultant in Manchester, NH

I worked at Supermedia full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

Use to be one of the best companies to work for when it was NYNEX, and progressively got worse; Bell Atlantic, Verizon, Idearc Media, and then Supermedia. Benefits were great at one point, and pay/compensation was great. I was fortunate and was able to retire early with pension still in tact.

Cons

Micro managed to a ridiculous point. More interested in selling the "flavor of the day" than what is best for the customer. New hires get it worse than veterans. Industry is perceived as dying, and internet products are not as well received.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

More detailed reports that are factual for customers and sales reps to believe in for internet products. Partner with Google because that is what the customer wants!

I worked at Supermedia full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    1. Merger coming up soon with Dex One... industry consolidation is necessary in order for directory business to remain a viable enterprise (whether print or on-line).
    2. Company continues to expand expertise into other "media" areas besides YP's (social media, reputation management, direct mail, ++)
    3. Marketing Focus remains with SMB's

    Cons

    1. As with many "American" companies, retirement benefits and subsidies have disappeared for most employees. Only the 401K program remains.
    2. As profits and sales have declined, staff has been necessarily reduced, causing "fewer employees to be responsible for ever increasing workloads".
    3. As "merger" activities move forward, there will be additional layoffs and disappointments that must occur in order for the new company to achieve the cost savings possible as a result of the merger.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep an eye on the attitudes of both your sales force and your external customers as you move through the merger activities. A breach of trust with either group will make for rough sailing.
