Compensation is good.
Benefits are reasonable.
Even after the recent RIF, there are still many very intelligent, highly motivated people at Symantec.
Opportunities for advancement are decent for new-hire, individual contributors for the first 5 years.
Cons
For creative, technical people, the corporate culture is deplorable; executives emphasize market share and lofty financial goals at every opportunity, while making little mention of technical innovation or service excellence.
Opportunities for advancement after the first 5 years are very slim.
Advice to Senior Management
Pick something you want Symantec to be the best at, and execute to that goal. Being the most diverse, least integrated conglomerate of little software companies in the world does not count as a goal. Best consumer anti-virus company, or best enterprise storage software company are valid goals. Execute toward one of those goals with innovation, action, integrity and respect, and customers will reward Symantec with market share.
