I have been working at Symantec

    Pros

High levels of expertise in teams. Good working environments. Excellent work life balance. Line managers very supportive, strong sense of team attitude.

    Cons

No clear direction in the company comes down from senior management. They request feedback but then ignore it, everything seems focussed on expansion and sales, with huge recognition given to the people making the sales, but little or none to the engineers making the products.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on fixing what you have rather than by trying to expand so rapidly and making things worse. Listen to your workers, they are the experts, it's why you employ them.

I have been working at Symantec

    Pros

Reasonably stable company - Symantec isn't going anywhere any time soon

Work/Life balance has been drastically improved in recent years - haven't worked a weekend in quite a while.

The people you work with are generally easy to work with.

    Cons

There are a wide variety of office cultures because of the way much of Symantec is formed from smaller companies which rarely share information.

Rewards, recognition, pay increases and promtions don't seem to be tied to job performance or personal professionalism.

There is a serious lack of trust between employees and management, in particular employees do not feel they can trust the information coming from management. One week we're told that everything is ok (in yet another pointless all hands), the next week we have a one fifth headcount cut.

Company strategy seems to be driven by knee-jerk reactions, as such the company lurches between different goals without really achieving a great deal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop buying companies - build on what you have.and strive for greater cohesion across your product line

Regain the trust of your employees by communicating honestly with them, not wasting their time and ensuring they are rewarded for their hard work

Pick a direction and go with it long term. When you change direction, make sure the reasons for the change are clear.
