Pros

Technical information. Some call this corporation "symantec university" because of all of the learning opportunities. I like the culture a lot. A wide variety of personality types.

Cons

Reduction in force is something you have to worry about no matter where you work. though. If you do well enough to stand out, they will go out of their way to try and keep you.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lower level management has a limited ability to effect change. Only people high up in the structure can make any real difference in most cases. The problem with any large corporation is being disconnected from the situation they are making the decision about. People doing the jobs need to be a real part of the decision making process. Mangers need to be left alone to manage the people the work with everyday. Trust but verify.

    Pros

The company is going through a lot of changes now, but probably will be a great place to work soon.

    Cons

Uncertainty is the main problem right now. Still a great place though.

Global company with small company feel.

    Pros

Symantec Corporation is a global company with a small company atmosphere. Most people know Symantec for its antivirus products, but it is a multi-dimensional company with plenty of opportunities.

    Cons

Although Symantec does have that small company feel - where senior personnel prefer to be on a first-name basis with their various employees, it is a publically traded company. Sometimes this means that when the stock price is not performing well, people will find themselves layed-off (regardless of how much time they have been with the company).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most major companies go through lay-offs at some point. The one recommendation I would make is to do a better job of keeping key personnel instead of just "cutting across the board". I was only with Symantec for a little over 2 years, but in that time I witnessed people get layed-off that had been with the company for double-digit years. Ultimately, they moved on to other companies, but that meant a serious loss of talent for Symantec, and an immediate benefit for a rival company.
