I worked at Symantec full-time for more than a year

Pros

Symantec Corporation is a global company with a small company atmosphere. Most people know Symantec for its antivirus products, but it is a multi-dimensional company with plenty of opportunities.

Cons

Although Symantec does have that small company feel - where senior personnel prefer to be on a first-name basis with their various employees, it is a publically traded company. Sometimes this means that when the stock price is not performing well, people will find themselves layed-off (regardless of how much time they have been with the company).

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most major companies go through lay-offs at some point. The one recommendation I would make is to do a better job of keeping key personnel instead of just "cutting across the board". I was only with Symantec for a little over 2 years, but in that time I witnessed people get layed-off that had been with the company for double-digit years. Ultimately, they moved on to other companies, but that meant a serious loss of talent for Symantec, and an immediate benefit for a rival company.

    Pros

Great place with the new CEO. Things seem to be really coming together.

    Cons

As an individual contributor, not much bad to say. Sometimes ask too many hours, but seldom of late.

I worked at Symantec full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great co-workers, collaborative atmosphere, good place for women and LGBTs to work, some excellent managers--and I hear that the new CEO is making good changes

    Cons

Terrible managers are both tolerated and protected. Complaints to senior management and HR are useless.
Employees are responsible for carving out their own career paths. Forget about receiving help or guidance from your manager--it isn't going to happen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Adopt a zero-tolerance stance on bullying. No one should have to take time off from work because their job made them sick.
Establish a career center to help employees chart their career goals and develop action plans for achieving those goals.
