I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Some good people; most want the best for the company, customers and other employees; some interesting projects

Cons

Lack of organization, too many managers, politics and personal interests were left unchecked and often derailed doing the right thing, too many people doing the same or similar work

Advice to Management

Good luck with the transformation!

    Positive Outlook
    Approves of CEO

    Pros

New CEO is shaking things up in a good way. Very optimistic for the future.

    Cons

Company is going through a lot of organizational changes that teams need to quickly realign and figure out new roles & responsibilities in order to execute.

    Advice to Management

Don't rely so much on consulting firms to help with transformation, put the right people in place and we should be able to do this ourselves.

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good Benefits, nice HQ campus, good internal training on everything from technical skills to soft skills, learning is encouraged, starting to try and be more sensitive to the needs of a diverse workforce. If you don't like your boss, just wait for the next reorg - you are likely to have a new one.

    Cons

Yearly lay-offs and reorganizations - seems to be a lifestyle for the company rather than a reaction to market conditions. The information that middle management (1-2 layers below C suites) dispenses cannot always be trusted. And, for some middle managers, their people management skills are so poor, they often reward the wrong traits and then seem dazed and confused when conflict ensues. Work/life balance, compensation and overall job satisfaction are dependent on how well you read your boss and then how often you give him/her what you perceive they want rather than what they actually ask for. There are a number of outright bullies in the rank and file that seem to get ahead quickly (that is until someone more "in favor" complains) which, I believe, points to a lack of leadership.

    Advice to Management

Play fair - institute an effective MBO policy (or something like it) so employees feel more in control of their rewards. Stop asking that employees trust you without returning the favor and, hold managers accountable, instead of their staff, for results and turn-over.
