I have been working at Symantec full-time for more than a year

Pros

Great health benefits, decent pay, nice people, stock price went up (good if you purchased stock via ESPP). Some of their products are great. New CEO, Steve Bennett, seems to really want to make the company a success. Has shaken out many middle managers and replaced VPs with his own cabal. Remains to be seen how effectively they can stream-line Symantec. Can't do worse than former management. I really think the new management team is sincerely trying to make things better.

Cons

Basically the same cons of any 20,000 plus person company. Tons of bureaucacy. Like trying to run through glue. Committees, meetings are required to do the simplest of things. Procedures, procedures, and protocols, and they are always changing. Senseless required HR meetings. Hard to focus on your core job with all the emails you receive from different departments. You have 20-25 plus passwords for 20-25 different computer systems that you need to login to from time to time. And you need to change those passwords every 90 days or so. Don't write them down somewhere near your computer! Constant bureaucratic noise. You forget what your job is. Is it to fill out HR questionnaires, self-evaluations, progress reports, legal documents or what?

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think it may be a good thing that you got rid of 2000 managers. Just keep doing your best to streamline the business and make systems more efficient. Get a single sign on program for employees to sign into all programs with one password. Cut out bureaucratic noise. Don't be so legalistic. Let employees do their jobs.

    Taking a downhill dive

    Pros

It is a job that provides a pay check.

    Cons

New 4.0 strategy is all hype. Company has changed into a micro managed hellion. Management makes a decision one day and then does an about face the next. They need to make a decision and stick with it for at least a full quarter. Abundance of products that staff is expected to be knowledgable about, but adequate training is lacking. Management tries to enlist fear in order to push sales staff to produce.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Symantec full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Steve Bennett truly is a leader with the passion, business knowledge, vision and demonstrated track record of success who will take Symantec to new heights. There is no doubt of this in my mind. Steven Gillett is also an incredible COO. They are both at the top of their game and possess brilliant strategic minds.

    Cons

Everything downhill from there needs major improvement. The short-term improvements towards operating margin were low hanging fruit. Getting the company aligned to function in an optimal fashion is another story. Symantec's product portfolio is too vast. This has forced the global operational and financial reporting processes to become chaotic. Some projects have been ongoing for the past 6 years. It's a consulting firm's dream!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bennett needs to simplify. There's still a lot of wheel spinning to go nowhere. Be certain that the strategy is set before embarking on system upgrades. Revisit, all leadership roles. Although there has been significant turnover, more is needed.
