I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Symantec is very supportive of women, LGBTQ, and diverse ethnicitiesand cultures. There are numerous affinity groups and they hold events/celebrations for all employees. The benefits are good (health care, etc) and the compensation seems to be market driven.

Cons

Symantec has a problem with setting course and committing to it. Case in point, the CEO Steve Bennett was getting high points with the employees and improving confidence within. Then the board fired him and replaced him with an interim CEO, Mike Brown. Previously the board had asked Steve (who was on the board at the time) in 2012 to replace the previous CEO Enrique Salem due to performance issues under Enrique. There have been three CEOs in less than three years. A number of changes were made by Steve (e.g. improving employee to manager ratio from 3/1 to 8/1) and employee morale was growing. Now we are all wondering when the other shoe drops.

Advice to Management

Get your plan together and execute it. Plan for short term, but more importantly plan for the long term.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

People are fantastic, very loyal to each-other and willing to assist to achieve common goals. There's been room for advancement and career growth through the years. Benefits package is very good although coverage vs cost has deteriorated over the years.

    Cons

Feels like someone just picked the company up like a snow globe and shook it till all the flakes are swirling like crazy (aka, Steve Bennett). Just when we get to the actual execution piece of his strategy the Board fired him. Complete change in leadership across the org. No one knows whats next, who'll be here, if we'll be sold off in pieces, etc. Alot of uncertainty is not a healthy work environment and promotes distrust, and "every man for himself" mentality. No clear goal/timelines for vision/strategy or execution.

    Advice to Management

Senior leadership needs to stabilize immediately and employee morale shored up.

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good work life balance. Supportive management. Generous in providing lab equipment for both home and offices. Friendly, hard working people.

    Cons

Low pay for talented sales engineers. These people are critical to the success of the account executives, yet they don't receive bonuses commensurate with their impact on the sales. They are often overlooked and just expected to "produce".

    Advice to Management

Be great at a few things, not ordinary in a lot of things. The company is not focused on solutions that deliver value. Customers are replacing them and given the recent firing of the CEO, it looks like it is not getting any better. They need to decide if they are a storage company or a security company; being both is not working out.
