Symantec QA Engineer in Lindon, UT:   (Current Employee)

Pros

Symantec does allow for steady, consistant work in the security and management software industry. Most everyone there has been with a company that they were acquired by Symantec and most don't want to leave because they are still working on the things they were before the acquisition. They are asking us in surveys how they can do better. If you are in marketing or sales you will be happy. The benefits are average.

Cons

Since we were mostly all acquired, the existing staff has an air of entitlement to position, status and progression. Any new employees are inadvertently made to feel expendable and of little worth to the larger company. No career path in the technical areas are available to employees in those positions. They have a stated policy of hiring and retaining the best. Anybody else seems to be expendable and not worth training to become the best. (Which of course would be far cheaper.)

Advice to Senior Management

Please come down into the trenches and see that the vast majority of your employees want to be better employees and they want to progress, just as you did, but in their own area of expertise. Please offer us training and viable career paths within the company.
