Pros

Synacor is a fast-growing company with a lot of potential to expand and become great company serving cable, telecom and other industries.

Cons

They company is growing quickly and is experiencing some internal growing pains that are currently being addressed by implementing new processes.

    I have been working at Synacor

    Pros

    Opportunity to work in Western NY. There are no jobs here in Western NY.
    It seems that they sincerely believe they are being good to employees and sincerely try.
    Company, for now, is growing and steady.
    There are a group of employees who are sincere and really work hard and help.

    Cons

    Heavily micromanaged. On a daily basis, we must document what I am doing in triplicate. Time tracked, The Left and Right hand are spinning out of control. Employee is always in the middle of chaos and vulnerable to corporate scapegoating. People who failed on huge European project are promoted and now failing again while upper management looks the other way. Some Developers are belligerent and arrogant and refuse to work with team members with management support.

    Meetings. Meetings are the main focus of Synacor. Web consulting is what they do on the side. Meetings are oppressive at Synacor. They waste at least 20 to 30 percent of your work time but last track it's around 40 or more.

    It's very difficult to get work done between one's own and everyone else's meetings.

    Innovation. Every time you think you have a great idea and they agree, they are more concerned with your time tracking report which also has to include what you are doing, what you want to do. So much could happen but won't because a report is always due every minute.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop the meetings. Reward true innovation and not quasi-innovation that only fits in the criteria of the reports and objectives. Hire more local people who need jobs and are interested in business succeeding here and not somewhere else in the world.

    Pros

    Free health benefit plan available and good for most people
    25 cent vending machines
    bi weekly Developer lunches to discuss various development related items
    casual dress code

    Cons

    Unwillingness to look at technologies that have not been "Approved" by a tech council that is not representative of all of the groups of the company. People seem to get promoted at random. There are select people that have most of the knowledge of a specific product and instead of training more people, the one person just does everything because it "has to be done now".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Diversify the knowledge. Let the employee's know what is going on. Let people explore new technologies without forcing them to be "the synacor way".
