Current Employee - Assistant Professor in Syracuse, NY
Current Employee - Assistant Professor in Syracuse, NY

I have been working at Syracuse University full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

(My department's) flexible with courses/hours and generous with small grants. Good TIAA-CREF pension plan, good tuition benefits for family.

Cons

POMCO isn't the best health care plan.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Career counseling for undergraduates is strong. Many departments are healthy. The move toward larger classes has been an effective cost-saving move, and I don't think it's hurt the quality of education. Connective Corridor is unpopular and a waste of resources.

Former Employee - Physics Department Intern in Syracuse, NY
Former Employee - Physics Department Intern in Syracuse, NY

I worked at Syracuse University as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The faculty of the physics department is very helpful and inclusive (well, those willing to hire interns), and very willing to take high school students for pay. They also go out of their way to give you a learning experience rather than just assigning grunt work.

    Cons

The initial contract (of which I didn't receive a copy) offered a wage of $9.50, but I was paid $8.00 and couldn't see an effective way to argue it. Hours were capped at 40 regardless of what was actually worked, and getting permission to work from the University is surprisingly difficult.

Current Employee - Graduate Research Assistant in Syracuse, NY

I have been working at Syracuse University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Health Insurance Coverage (including dental!)
    Tuition Paid

    Cons

Must be self motivated - professors won't seek you out (at least in my department).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work out the fellowship disbursements. They're late and we don't know when we get paid.
