I have been working at System Planning Corporation

Pros

It is a small private company in the federal contractor field so a lot of the work is challenging and on the cutting edge. The company leadership supports their employees. Working in a smaller company you get to know your co-workers and management much better and interact in a more personal way. A smaller company allows more freedom to explore different sides of your job as you are in a more "jack of all trades" situation and not locked down to one thing as happens in a larger environment. As a private company do not need to worry so much about "market conditions", being taken over, new ownership, etc.

Cons

While the company works on some research and development projects that are next generation technology, the company itself is behind the times a little. All time cards must be filled out by hand on a weekly basis and turned in every Monday! Only last year did they add another holiday to give us 6 holidays a year. As a smaller company the salary range is less than some of the heavy players in the federal contractor world. As a private company, change comes slowly.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get an automated time card system and make it a two week pay period instead of one. After all that is how we are paid and it would help as SPC has a lot of employees who work at government sites and their work schedule is set by when governments offices are open. The productive time saved by management who must review time cards every Monday and by employees who must deliver them, would more that pay for any start up cost such a system would generate.

I worked at System Planning Corporation

    Pros

Learn (on your own) skills to do a job and then go somewhere else to get compensation and a career path.

    Cons

A certain Vice President (and owner) is unstable, which causes ripples throughout the entire organization. Management and personnel decisions are often made whimsically and capriciously, without regard for the health of the business overall. Training is not encouraged, hiring/firing is based upon personalities and not upon skills or past performance. As a result, morale is low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Explore why many talented mid-level managers have left (over the last ten years) to become successful at competing organizations. Explore why there are absolutely no minorities in any management position.

    Pros

Small company, family type atmosphere, many opportunities to learn new things and blaze your own career.

    Cons

Small company, benefits and pay weren't great. Upper management drama can trickle down to lower levels.
