If it weren't for the kids...

I have been working at THINK Together

Pros

The kids will definitely change your life, go ahead and get attached. If it's one thing I miss, it's those kids. It's a shame that management does not see the harm in putting different employees into the kids lives, then removing them because of mistakes that should have fallen on the shoulders of the site coordinator.

Cons

The program almost completely depends on the competence of your site coordinator. But don't try to complain to anyone, you will only be given textbook "protocol" answers. Excuses, excuses, excuses. They view Program Leaders as being completely disposable.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management, please realize that site coordinators are not the only people that work for the company. Firing program leaders will not replace failing sites....realize that it could be (and probably is) your beloved site coordinators.

Inordinate amount of responsibility that amounts to more than one job.

    Pros

Chance to work with kids in difficult situations can be very rewarding. Good way to gain management experience in education.

    Cons

Too many pointless mandatory meetings that take up the time they want you to use to develop your site. You are expected to work miracles with a miniscule budget ($500/month for a program with 150 kids every school day?! Really?!) and while they are adamant about work no more than your scheduled hours and taking lunch breaks, the vast amount of reports, audits, scheduling, event planning, lesson planning, and meetings you must accomplish - in addition to keeping your management and the school management happy - is impossible to accomplish. All school sites I heard about hate having you there and will use you as a scapegoat for everything ranging from trash on the floor (pencil shavings, writing in books - do you think there's a chance that might have come from the kids in the regular school day?) to false accusations that could end people's careers. For $34K/year, there are much easier jobs with less responsibility that give you networking opportunities and better learning opportunities (file clerks and administrative assistants make more - heck, school custodians get paid more than you!) Oh, and your supervisor will only come around when something does not please the management - but you'll hear a lot about all the coaching they offer (that's just codespeak for more pointless meetings.) Unless you are desperate for a job - and I mean cannot put food on the table kind of desperate - please don't work here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a reason (actually, many reasons) why you have such high turnover at all levels. Be realistic with what is expected of your employees, and don't be afraid to spend a little money on additional personnel (maybe even offer a decent wage for so much responsibility) rather than to inflate executive salaries and benefits.

I have been working at THINK Together

    Pros

THINK Together has given me the opportunity to work with a larger amount of students. This has helped me learn how to have better classroom managing strategies!

    Cons

Unfortunately, this job is not full time. This job is perfect for busy college students interested in working within the education field.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is very difficult to serve the students with such a small budget for supplies and activities. More Resources are needed.
